About Robert Ghiz:

Young and energetic, PEI Premier Robert Ghiz gained a good sense of politics and government as the son of the late Joe Ghiz, who was Premier of PEI from 1986 to 1993. Robert Ghiz worked in federal politics in Ottawa before returning home to Prince Edward Island to run for the leadership of the PEI Liberal Party in 2003. An avid sports fan, Robert Ghiz has a collegial style and is quick to give credit to the members of his team. In 2007 he led the Liberal Party from 4 seats to 23 seats, defeating the long-standing government of Conservative Pat Binns.

Political Career of Robert Ghiz:

  • After graduating from university, Robert Ghiz worked as an assistant for federal Liberal Sheila Copps, then Minister of Heritage.

  • In 2001, Robert Ghiz joined the office of Prime Minister Jean Chretien as an advisor on the Atlantic provinces.

  • In 2002, Robert Ghiz moved back to Charlottetown, and soon afterwards announced his bid for the leadership of the PEI Liberal Party.

  • Robert Ghiz was elected Leader of the PEI Liberal Party in April 2003.

  • Robert Ghiz was first elected to the PEI Legislative Assembly in the PEI provincial election of 2003.

  • As Leader of the Opposition, Robert Ghiz served as the Opposition Critic for the Premier and Intergovernmental Affairs, Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Seniors and the Attorney General.

  • In the 2007 PEI general election, Robert Ghiz led the Liberal Party to victory, defeating the long-serving government of Progressive Conservative Premier Pat Binns.

  • Robert Ghiz was sworn in as the Premier of PEI in June 2007.
