Ontario Rejects Electoral Reform Proposal

In the Ontario Refernendum on Electoral Reform held on October 10, 2007, Ontario voters rejected an alternative electoral system proposed by the Ontario Citizens' Assembly - a mixed member proportional system.

How the Ontario Referendum Was Decided

Two thresholds were required for the referendum to be decided in favour of a change to the electoral system:

  • 60 percent of all votes cast in the province, and

  • a simple majority of more than 50 percent of votes cast in at least 64 provincial electoral districts (the equivalent of 60 percent or more of provincial electoral districts).

Results of the Ontario Refendum on Electoral Reform

Unofficial results of the referendum vote for the alternative electoral system proposed by the Citizens’ Assembly (Mixed Member Proportional) were:

  • 36.9 percent of all votes cast in the province, and

  • a simple majority of more than 50 percent of votes cast in only 5 electoral districts out of 107.
