Registration of Canadians Abroad

Register with Foreign Affairs Canada When You Travel Abroad

By , About.com Guide

Updated: 02/08/09

If you're Canadian and planning on living or travelling abroad, take advantage of the Registration of Canadians Abroad service provided by Foreign Affairs Canada.

The registration is used by the Foreign Affairs Department to contact Canadians with urgent advice and information in the case of an emergency, or to inform you of an emergency at home.

You can register online or by contacting a Canadian government office abroad.

Important Note: The Registration of Canadians Abroad service was upgraded in late December 2008 to allow users to better manage and update their own information online. If you registered for the service before December 14, 2008, you must register again to continue to receive safety and security updates.

For more information on countries with potential problems, it is also a good idea to check the Foreign Affairs Canada Country Travel Reports.
